Phaze is working with PGMO to Elevate Circadian Performance in Elite Football Officiating

Phaze is proud to announce an agreement with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMO), the organisation responsible for overseeing elite refereeing across the Premier League and English football. This marks a pivotal step in applying circadian performance strategies to one of the most intense and demanding performance domains in elite sport.

Modern referees are expected to deliver peak cognitive and physical output across multiple roles, leagues, and time zones. With Premier League fixtures on weekends, European matches midweek and international matches, referees now operate in a global, high-frequency calendar with less time to recover.

PGMO recognises that recovery strategies are important and wants a system to manage performance through travel, jet lag, social jet lag, and disrupted sleep cycles – without adding complexity. That’s where Phaze comes in.

An Integrated Solution: The App + Coaching Hub

PGMO referees and performance staff now have access to Phaze’s circadian performance system, built around two core tools:

  • The Phaze App: Delivers personalised guidance for sleep timing, light exposure, training, and recovery, based on each referee’s travel times, work schedule, sleep needs, and chronotype.

  • The Coaching Hub: Provides performance and medical teams with a centralised view of sleep and circadian data across all officials, enabling real-time adjustments, proactive planning, and year-round support.

Every referee is different. That’s why Phaze uses unique user sleep and chronotype data – to identify the needs of the circadian system and tailor guidance around sleep, light exposure, and performance windows. It’s not just about jet lag recovery. It’s about knowing when you’re wired to perform at your best, and aligning that to your schedule.

Together, these tools create a scalable system for managing performance in motion.

A Strategic Shift in Officiating Support

“PGMO referees face immense demands – mid-day Premier League games one day, evening European fixtures the next, International fixtures while club football rests, relentlessly repeating over and over. Phaze gives PGMO a scalable, science-based way to support recovery, consistency, and readiness for the officials across the calendar.”

Tom Clark, Founder, Phaze

“Phaze App has been an invaluable tool for us as professional football referees, helping us stay sharp and recover effectively from domestic and international fixtures with demanding travel schedules. All referees are different but the Phaze App and Coaching Hub allows us to continue to gain insight into our response to travel, time-zone shifts, and disrupted sleep patterns that we deal with. Football is about margins and we believe this will aid the already-strong support in place for us to maintain peak performance levels consistently, whether on the pitch or on VAR duty throughout the season.”

Jarred Gillett, PGMO referee

From travel fatigue mitigation to chronotype-based planning, Phaze equips PGMO and its officials to meet the demands of modern football, with precision, clarity, and confidence.
